"We think Viagra and generic drugs are very safe," said Dr. Steven L. Wolfe, a professor at Arizona State University and director of the Division of Dermatology, Food and Drug Administration. "But if the FDA doesn't want to approve Viagra or generic drugs for these purposes, we think it's best to remove them."
The drug is sold under brand names like Cialis and Levitra. But the drug's manufacturer, Pfizer, said the company is not aware of any such safety issues. Pfizer said it was working with the FDA to address the issue.
"As part of its FDA-requested drug review, we asked the FDA to determine whether there are any risks to consumers of purchasing a drug for unapproved uses," said Dr. David E. Withers, Pfizer's chief medical officer.
"We are not aware of any such product liability cases in Arizona," said Dr. Withers, director of the Division of Dermatology, Food and Drug Administration. "In the absence of such litigation, we believe there is a very good chance that there are other safe and effective medications to treat erectile dysfunction."
In a statement, Pfizer said the FDA has received multiple reports of "severe adverse reactions" to the drug, including cardiac problems, liver failure, kidney failure and allergic reactions to other drugs.
"We believe these reports are serious and warrant immediate medical attention," said Pfizer spokesman Dan Hoey, "and we will vigorously oppose any action we take."
The drug is prescribed for erectile dysfunction in men by a physician. It can also be used to treat impotence.
